Tower for Sinthian

A Tower for Sinthian is architectural object and landmark developed as part of a residency at Thread, a cultural centre in rural Senegal. Built from the clearing and carving out of an existing termite mound the project acts as a signification of both the local culture and natural landscape.

In many parts of Sub-Saharan Africa termite mounds traditionally are often associated with ancestral spirits. Children are told to greet their grandparents when passing by one of these architectural sand structures.

This project is informed by this belief and by the growing migration of many brothers and sisters of local communities through dangerous routes. It wants to make a place to visit - outside the midst of everyday life - to connect both to the ancient spirit of this place and to those who have gone far away.
